How many bundles are in a roofing square?
The answer depends on the product. GAF specifies three bundles per square for Timberline HDZ. Choose the custom setting for another product and copy its installed coverage from the package. The calculator rounds up only after applying waste.
Worked example: a 2,000-square-foot roof
2,000 sq ft ÷ 100 = 20 squares. With an illustrative 10% waste allowance, coverage needed becomes 2,200 sq ft, or 22 squares. At three bundles per square, that is 66 bundles of field shingles.
What this does not count
Starter and hip/ridge shingles have separate coverage specifications. Measure their linear lengths and use the relevant accessory labels. Valleys, penetrations, layout, and partial roof sections affect the takeoff; a bundle count alone is not a complete material order.
Do not enter your home’s interior square footage. Roof slope and overhangs change surface area, and multi-story living space does not represent the footprint of the roof.
