Starter shingles form a specified strip beneath the beginning of the field-shingle installation at the roof edge. They help protect the first course and support the roof's perimeter seal. They should appear as a named product and quantity in a complete material plan, rather than disappearing into a generic field-shingle bundle total.
Why the first visible course needs a starter

A starter strip is not roof underlayment, and it is not ridge cap. Those components serve different locations and use different quantity calculations. This is why “all accessories included” can be difficult to evaluate without a short product list.
Do not assume a cut field shingle is equivalent to a factory starter in every roof system. Ask the contractor which method the selected manufacturer permits and which accessory is required for the proposed warranty. The answer should identify the actual product and installation requirement rather than a general habit.
Calculate starter in linear feet
Begin with the roof edges where the selected installation requires starter. Add those measured lengths, divide by the product's published linear-foot coverage per package, and round up to complete packages. Include any job-specific allowance separately so it is clear where the additional material comes from.
Do not multiply the home's floor area by a starter factor. A long, narrow roof and a compact roof can have the same surface area but different perimeters. Additions and projections can change the edge length again.
An example using a published product
IKO Leading Edge Plus lists approximately 109 linear feet of coverage per bundle, with instructions to check current packaging before purchase. Suppose an illustrative takeoff requires 180 linear feet of starter: 180 divided by 109 equals approximately 1.65, so the base order rounds to two bundles.
Now suppose an additional roof section brings the measured requirement to 225 feet. Two bundles provide approximately 218 feet at that published coverage, so the base count becomes three. The difference comes from the measured perimeter, not the roof's total squares.
This is an arithmetic example, not an order for your home. Confirm current package coverage, required locations, cuts, and other allowances with the installer. If a different starter is selected, replace 109 with that product's actual coverage before calculating.
Questions that make two bids comparable

- Which edges receive it under the selected installation?
- What measured length was used for the order?
- What package coverage and allowance support the quantity?
- Does the specified roof warranty require this accessory or another approved option?
- How will a product substitution be approved?
These questions do not require you to supervise nailing or give installation instructions. They help establish that the estimate includes a complete system and that the crew receives the same specification you approved.
Document the edge before the field shingles conceal it
Ask for progress photographs of representative roof edges at the appropriate stage. A finished roof photograph may show attractive shingles while revealing little about the starter beneath them. The contractor should choose a safe method to document the installation without asking you to climb onto the roof.
Save the product label and installation records with the roof paperwork. If an edge later needs repair, those records help the repair contractor identify what was installed. A visible edge issue still needs inspection; the presence of a starter product in the original contract does not diagnose a later failure.
