A cleaning plan should identify the method

GAF's moss-removal guidance discusses controlled treatment and low-pressure rinsing. Ask the provider to identify the roof product, proposed treatment, runoff management, and surrounding-property protection before work begins.

Visible growth does not by itself establish that the entire roof needs replacement. Ask whether the inspection found damaged covering or only growth requiring maintenance. Cleaning and repairing damaged material are different scopes.

Compare the surface before and after

Request photographs of the growth and surrounding roof before treatment, then a completion record. Ask what appearance change should happen immediately and what may occur over time. This avoids paying for repeated aggressive cleaning because a treatment is expected to work gradually.

For example, a shaded roof section with moss needs a different conversation from a uniform dark stain without raised growth. Do not assume every discoloration is moss or use the same treatment without identification.

Keep the cleaning method and date with maintenance records. If the provider discovers a roof defect, request a separate photographed repair recommendation. Start with a roof condition assessment when you are unsure what the roof can tolerate.
