The profile expands an existing ACRE siding family rather than introducing an entirely new material. What is new is the cedar-shingle format. Modern Mill calls it the only stainable composite shingle siding currently on the market. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent long-term performance finding.

The launch matters because homeowners usually have to compromise when they want a stained shingle look. Natural cedar needs periodic care. Vinyl reproduces the outline but not a stained wood surface. Fiber cement can copy the profile and is paintable, but it does not accept transparent stain like wood. ACRE is trying to occupy the space between those categories.

Modern Mill says installers can cut, rout, fasten, and sand ACRE with standard woodworking tools. The material is not structural. A complete wall still needs the correct water-resistive barrier, flashing, drainage details, fasteners, clearances, and local code approval.

What should hot-climate homeowners know about heat?

Heat is the most important technical caveat for Austin, Houston, and New Orleans homeowners. The fact sheet says ACRE contains PVC and generally requires coatings with a light reflectance value (LRV) of 55 or higher. A darker color below that threshold needs review and approval from Modern Mill.

The same document warns that concentrated sunlight reflected from energy-efficient Low-E windows can raise the siding's surface temperature enough to cause melting, sagging, warping, discoloration, excess movement, or faster weathering. This is a known exterior-design issue with several heat-sensitive materials, and it should be checked before ordering siding for a wall facing reflective glass.

Modern Mill's care and maintenance guidance also tells installers to acclimate the boards to installation temperature for at least two hours and account for changing ambient temperatures when setting gaps. That deserves attention in St. Louis too, where large seasonal temperature swings can expose weak spacing details.

A practical bid should identify the proposed finish and its LRV, nearby Low-E glass, sun orientation, required joint spacing, and the exact installation-guide revision. "Composite" does not remove the need for climate-specific detailing.

What does the ACRE warranty cover?

Modern Mill publishes a lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects and rot or splintering caused by normal use, provided the installation and maintenance requirements are followed. The important limit is the remedy: the warranty allows Modern Mill to replace defective product or issue product credit.

It does not cover labor, removal, reinstallation, freight, taxes, or other charges tied to a failed installation. Painted or stained finishes applied by the purchaser or another company are excluded. The warranty also excludes damage tied to improper installation, incompatible accessories, structural movement, impact, hurricanes, windstorms, and ordinary weathering.

The warranty can be transferred once within five years of the original purchase. A claim must be filed within 90 days after discovering the issue, while the material remains installed so Modern Mill can inspect it. Homeowners should keep the invoice, product identifiers, finish approval, installation photos, and the guide version used on the job.

How does ACRE compare with cedar, vinyl, and fiber cement?

ACRE's clearest difference is finish. It is designed to accept stain, which can produce a closer cedar appearance than paint-grade fiber cement or molded vinyl. Its panel format may also reduce the piece-by-piece labor required for natural cedar shingles.

5. Has the crew installed ACRE before, and can it show a completed project through at least one seasonal cycle?
6. Which local distributor stocks the product, trim, plugs, and replacement material?
7. If a warranty claim occurs, who pays for removal and reinstallation when the manufacturer supplies product only?

Ask for a physical sample and view it in morning and afternoon light. The product page notes that natural rice-hull variation and digital screens can change how the finish looks. A sample also lets you compare the grain and edge detail against cedar, fiber cement, and other composites before the material order becomes nonreturnable.

Modern Mill also publishes enough technical detail to reveal where the product needs care, especially around dark colors, reflected heat, temperature-dependent spacing, and warranty documentation.

The exact shingle profile does not yet have a long independent field history. Treat it as a product to investigate, sample, and price alongside established alternatives. Do not treat launch coverage as proof of how it will look or move on your wall after several Texas summers or St. Louis winters.
