Roof Ice Dams: Drainage, Insulation, and the Repair Question

An ice dam blocks drainage near a roof edge, allowing meltwater to back up. Address the immediate condition safely and investigate the roof-and-attic conditions that contribute to recurrence.

Snow can melt over a warmer roof area, run toward a colder unheated eave, and freeze there. Repeated melt-and-freeze cycles build the ice ridge; later meltwater can collect behind it and move beneath shingles. GAF bulletin R-116 explains that mechanism. The visible ice and the heat or air movement contributing to it are separate parts of the assessment.

Why an edge buildup matters

GAF's ice-dam explanation describes the blocked drainage path and the role of evaluating attic insulation and ventilation. A membrane below the covering and correction of the conditions causing repeated dams are different parts of the discussion.

Do not climb an icy roof, chip at the covering, or stand beneath unstable ice. Have qualified professionals assess safe removal and any necessary temporary protection.

Separate damage from prevention

Record when interior water appeared and which roof edge was affected. After conditions permit inspection, ask whether shingles, flashing, gutters, or underlying materials were damaged. An ice-dam event does not establish that every roof component needs replacement.

For prevention, ask for an explanation of the attic and drainage findings rather than simply another product sale. If the roof is replaced, identify the specified membrane coverage and edge details in the contract.

Keep photographs and the recommended follow-up scope. Compare ice-and-water barrier requirements with the actual roof assembly, and request a repair assessment for confirmed damage.
